What to see and do at Snibston Colliery Park
History
An area rich in history, visitors can enjoy the Snibston Heritage Trail which houses several historic buildings and machinery. The trails bring the history of mining in Coalville, Northwest Leicestershire, to life with a sense of how the mine worked in days gone by.
Also dotted around the site are various sculptures, commissioned to reflect the mining and locomotive history of this former colliery site. Amongst these are the Irish elk sculptures created by local artist Sally Matthews. The sculptures were created using recycled and reformed metal and were chosen to represent the elks which roamed the area before the Ice Age.
Nature
The grounds of the park cover more than 40 hectares of mixed habitats including the former colliery spoil heap which has been reclaimed to form woodland and an open rough grassland area. A network of paths loop around the site and include viewpoints along the way.
At the southern edge is the Grange Nature Reserve with its Victorian arboretum, wetland area, boardwalk, wildflower meadow and two fishing lakes. Once the gardens of the Colliery Manager, it is now a special area of ecological interest and was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1993.
Biking
Cyclists and mountain bikers are spoilt for choice at this site with dedicated areas in which riders can practice their skills. The mountain bike trail is a 4km blue grade route of jumps, bumps and berms around the original colliery spoil heap and through the woodlands and natural foliage.
A skills area and pump track helps build confidence and momentum before moving on to tackle the trail – perfect for younger riders. Here the track has been specially designed with balance bikes, scooters and pedal bikes in mind.
Before visiting our skills area and pump track and mountain bike trails, please familiarise yourself with the safety information which can be found on our resources page, and also down below.
Playground
The outdoor playground offers a great space to keep little and big explorers entertained. With lots of play equipment to choose from, there is something suitable for all ages.
Fishing
For anglers, the two lakes located within the Grange Nature Reserve are well stocked with a variety of fish including carp, roach, tench and perch. Fishing season tickets can be purchased for use from 1 June to 31 March. Day tickets can also be purchased from staff on-site. Please note that fishing is not permitted at night.
